Please consider this process and associated procedures to protect and prepare the Chromebook for summer storage.

Students can help with any of this these procedures where appropriate.

1) Remove student accounts not in use from devices

At the end of the year, or beginning of the school year, students can be instructed to remove user accounts not needed on their device from the Chromebook sign-in screen by following these steps:

Remove an account from a Chromebook

If someone no longer uses your Chromebook regularly, you can remove their account.

  1. On the Chromebook sign-in screen, select the profile you want to remove.
  2. Next to the profile name, select the Down arrow .
  3. Select Remove this user.
  4. In the box that appears, select Remove this user.

2) Inspection

  1. Brief inspection for visible damage (e.g., hinge, screen, keyboard, etc...)
  2. Set aside in a designated area or with a paper note any units that may need repair;
  3. Record in Chromebook repair sheet (site resource contacts only), or..
  4. For classroom Chromebooks, notify tech team in an email (one email for multiple units is ok!)

3) Storage procedure  -- There are two options:

Option 1) For schools or classrooms with powered Chromebook or Chrome tablet carts:

  1. Leave Chromebooks/tablet connected to the charger at least overnight to ensure a near-full charge
(The Chromebook/tablet battery level does not need to be individually inspected when left to charge at least once overnight)
  2. Unplug the charging cable from the Chromebook/tablet
  3. Unplug and secure the cart power cable.

Option 2) For those Chromebooks typically checked out to students throughout the year. (middle and/or high school)

Chromebooks that do not require repair or additional processing can be powered down to protect the battery by following this procedure.

Prepare Chromebooks for long-term storage

  1. Charge your Chromebooks so that the battery is at least 80% full.
This ensures that even when the battery discharges while unplugged over the summer, it won’t fully run out of power.
  2. To slow the discharge rate during storage, do not physically remove the battery from the Chromebook for storage. Instead, take the following steps:
    1. Connect the device to a charger and then, turn it on.
    2. Hold Refresh Refresh and Power Power at the same time.
    3. While holding these keys, remove the power cable from device and then release the keys.
The device should shut down and remain off.
    4. Confirm the battery disconnect worked by pressing the power button.
The device should not power on, despite having a battery charge. The Chromebook won’t power on by touching the power button or opening the lid, until you plug the device back to a power source.
    5. Store it in a cool, dry place -- with an ambient temperature of near or less than 78 F (25 C).

4) Get your Chromebooks ready for school

Approximately a week before students will resume use of the Chromebooks, get the Chromebooks ready for students.  Students can assist with this procedure

  1. Connect the Chromebooks to a charger and a power source.
This will get them out of the battery disconnect state.
  2. Confirm the Device will Power up and be ready for use.

  3. Update them to the latest Chrome OS release.
(this update step is optional, Chromebooks will auto-update through regular use)
This can take time, as multiple Chrome OS versions might have been released since the last time the device was updated.

Note: Most Chromebooks should not be stacked one on top of another more than seven (7) units.
